Shaken and stirred: HUGE changes coming to Cheltenham multiplex

A 4DX extreme cinema experience is coming to The Brewery Quarter complete with moving seats, water and smell effects, plus a new Starbucks and a VIP foyer serving hot and cold food.

People walking through The Brewery Quarter have seen the former Apres bar next to Cineworld covered by hoardings as the multiplex has expanded but customers have been told little about what's  going on behind the scenes.

In a planning application submitted by Cineworld has revealed some of the big changes that will be in place in coming months.

The application is for new signs at the front of the building and show that work is currently under way for a 4DX cinema and a Starbucks coffee shop.

The 4D Extreme cinema experiences means people watching films could feel wind, snow, fog, lightning as well as bubbles, water and smells.

As the action unfolds on screen, your seat will also move!

Starbucks coffee houses are already in 28 Cineworlds across the UK and typically open from around 7am.

In detailed drawings submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council, plans also show an outdoor seating area for Starbucks.

The application is seeking permission for these new advertising signs

The ongoing works at Cineworld saw the closure of The Screening Rooms next to Cineworld, which was part of the chain but showed films in smaller, luxury rooms - offering waiter service to your seat.

But the new development appears to show three so-called VIP cinemas on the ground floor with seating for 28, 34 and 42 people.

Plans also appear to show associated seating and bar area in a 'VIP foyer' where hot and cold food would be served.

What 4DX cinema offers

This is a form of cinema exclusive to Cineworld in the UK and features stimulating effects like water, wind, scent and strobe lighting that are timed to enhance what’s happening on screen.

It was developed in South Korea and means your seat will move in time with the movie.

Cineworld explains: "4DX screens have high-tech motion seats that move in perfect synchronization with the film.

"On top of the moving seats, special effects are added in line with the action on screen.

"These effects include wind, water, fog, lightning, bubbles, rain, scents and snow.

"The film itself can be in both 2D and 3D formats.

What's this rival cinema in Cheltenham?

The changes at The Brewery Quarter come after a multi-million pound bid to build a five-screen cinema, rooftop bar and space for restaurants in Cheltenham's Regent Arcade shopping centre was approved last October.

The grand revamp includes a five-screen boutique cinema - where movie-goers will be able to comfortably watch films on a sofa - a rooftop bar and three new restaurants.

The development, which will cost £3million, was unanimously approved at a council meeting by Cheltenham borough councillors.

It is expected that the add-ons to the complex will open by the end of 2019.

The cinema is one of the new uses intended for the huge vacant space in the Regent Arcade that was home to fashion department-chain British Home Stores (Bhs) before its collapse in 2016.

Tivoli has been named as the firm which will launch the luxury cinema in the Regent Arcade shopping complex.
