But right here in the heart of our community, a brilliant counter-movement is quietly thriving. The Charlton Kings Repair Café is changing the narrative, proving that sustainability can start right in our own backyards.
What is the Charlton Kings Repair Café?
Organised as a community initiative by the Charlton Kings Parish Council (with support from local sustainability groups), the Repair Café is a monthly event designed to help residents repair, reuse, and share everyday items.
Instead of watching valuable household goods head off to local landfills, residents are invited to bring their broken or worn belongings to Stanton Hall (right next to the library) to give them a second lease on life.
Skills, not just quick fixes
What makes the Repair Café truly special is that it isn’t a drop-off-and-run service. When you bring an item in, you sit down side-by-side with a skilled local volunteer.
As they work their magic, they explain what they are doing. It’s a brilliant, hands-on masterclass in resourcefulness. You walk away not only with a working item, but with a better understanding of how things are put together and how to fix them yourself next time.
At any given session, you can find help across a brilliant range of core services:
- Small electrical items: Lamps, radios, toasters, and hair dryers that won't cooperate.
- Clothes and textiles: Patching up holes, fixing stubborn zippers, or repairing torn seams.
- Knife and tool sharpening: Bringing dull kitchen knives, garden shears, and tools back to razor-sharp life.
- Rotating pop-up repairs: Look out for special monthly additions like bike maintenance or jewellery fixes.
A true community hub
Step inside Stanton Hall on a Repair Café afternoon, and you'll immediately notice it's about much more than just screwdrivers and sewing kits.
It functions as a warm, buzzing social space. Neighbours sit together over a cup of tea and a biscuit while waiting for their turn, chatting with local experts who generously volunteer their time, patience, and trade secrets. It’s an incredible way to build local connections while cutting down on carbon footprints.
How to get involved
If you have something sitting in a cupboard waiting to be fixed, here is what you need to know:
When & where: It typically runs on the third Saturday of the month from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at Stanton Hall (Church Street, next to Charlton Kings Library).
The cost: It is completely free to attend, though donations are warmly welcomed to help cover the costs of hall hire, tea, and equipment.
The rules: No need to book ahead - just drop in with one item at a time and let the volunteers work their magic!
