A new secondary school means Leckhampton is well worth studying for families.
It’s a well-known fact that Cheltenham has a considerable shortfall in secondary school capacity, but this situation is set to improve with the building of The High School Leckhampton. This brand new, co-ed comprehensive school for south Cheltenham will go a long way in handling the growth in pupil numbers in the area and make Leckhampton an even more desirable place to live.
Dee Hyatt, Branch Manager of Peter Ball & Co in Leckhampton, explains: ‘In this past year, 120 children in Leckhampton didn’t have a secondary school in Cheltenham to go to. This new school will fill the void when families have children at that age.’
What if you’re applying for Year 7, starting 2022?
If you want to apply for a Year 7 place at this new school, then you need to think about moving sooner rather than later, with the deadline for applications for 2022’s in-take at the end of October this year.
Taking a new perspective
This £30 million flagship school project has been commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council and is sponsored and developed by the hugely successful Balcarras school in Charlton Kings. The High School Leckhampton will bring with it a particular ethic: designed to be eco-friendly, with the school uniform even made from recycled bottles. State of the art facilities will also help its ambition to be a successful state secondary school for the area.
The new school is located on the southern edge of Cheltenham on Farm Lane, overlooked by the impressive Leckhampton Hill and just over two miles from the Balcarras site. This idyllic setting is just a short distance from the Cotswolds.
A village feel and full of variety
Leckhampton itself has a charming village feel to it, with an eclectic mix of independent shops on the Bath Road: drop into the local butcher’s or bookshop, stop off for a coffee or enjoy a pub lunch. It means you don’t necessarily have to go into Cheltenham to shop but, if you want to, it’s just a short walk into the centre of town. Via the Shurdington Road you have easy access to the motorway, and the countryside’s on your doorstep too: the best of both worlds. ‘Leckhampton Hill is great for walking dogs, running and cycling,’ Dee explains. ‘Being on top of the hill makes you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere’
A lot of Leckhampton’s properties are turn of the century. Dee outlines the variety that the Edwardian and Victorian houses in the area offer: ‘People have done all sorts of things with them; it’s quite interesting. A two-bed terrace can turn out to be a four-bed townhouse with a converted loft, 100t garden, and garage!’
Be in your new home for your school application
The new school will open to Year 7 pupils only in September this year. Initially, there will be four forms of entry, rising to six in the future and a total pupil number of 900. Delays in the planning process mean the new site will not be ready until part way through the 2020-21 school year. However, the 120 new Year 7 pupils will be using purpose-built accommodation at Balcarras, just for their first year.
If you want the opportunity for your child to go to The High School Leckhampton in September 2022, you need to apply by 31st October 2021. If secondary school is still some time away for your children, then Naunton Park, Leckhampton and St James’ are all outstanding primary schools in the area.
